Dek, a young and undersized Yautja from a warrior clan, seeks to prove his worth as a hunter to gain his father Njhorr's approval and elevate his status. With the aid of his brother Kwei, Dek plans to travel to the notoriously lethal planet Genna as his hunting ground, targeting an unkillable apex predator, the Kalisk. Their father arrives before Dek can leave. Dek learns that his father has ordered Kwei to kill him, deeming him too weak to survive. Kwei defies the order and is executed by Njhorr. With his dying act, Kwei activates a transport to send Dek to Genna, granting him a chance at the hunt.
